What is WBC?

WBC stands for White Blood Cell Count, which measures the number of white blood cells (leukocytes) in your blood. These cells are part of your immune system and help fight infections.

Normal Range

  • Adults: 4,500 to 11,000 white blood cells per microliter (mcL) of blood

What Abnormal Values Mean

  • Low WBC (Leukopenia): May weaken immune system, can be caused by certain medications, autoimmune conditions, or bone marrow problems
  • High WBC (Leukocytosis): May indicate infection, inflammation, stress, or certain blood disorders
