Sample ID Identifier
What is a Sample ID?
A Sample ID is a unique identifier assigned to each biological sample collected from study participants. It tracks individual specimens through collection, storage, processing, and analysis.
Purpose
- Sample Tracking: Follow samples from collection to analysis
- Quality Control: Link results to specific sample handling conditions
- Multiple Samples: Distinguish between multiple samples from the same participant
- Longitudinal Studies: Track samples collected at different time points
Sample ID vs. Participant ID
| Identifier | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Participant ID | Identifies the person |
| Sample ID | Identifies the specific specimen |
One participant may have multiple samples (different time points, different biofluids).
